In the Spring of 2017, a successful business leader asked me to take his five granddaughters on a weekend retreat and provide professional development and mentorship in a private, relaxed, yet focused setting. There were two goals; first, help these young women unlock their inner greatness and second, help them stay away from the people who would derail them. Pretty much sums up the path to a tremendous life!In November 2017, we convened outside of Charlotte, NC and completed a weekend of discovery, growth, and goal setting. At the close, we committed to gathering once a year to stay on track, build our tremendous tribe of accountability partners, and to set new milestones. These goals included; starting a financial planning business, opening a restaurant, earning a CPA license, building a health/yoga practice, and moving back to the US after completing a master’s degree overseas and finding employment in their desired field.
Each quarter we would join a google hang out to provide updates, discuss the assigned books we had read, and request input on issues. Three months is an excellent space to ‘name’ a goal and then go out to do the work and ‘claim’ the goal. Knowing I was going to meet up with these tremendous young ladies every 90 days kept Ms. Tracey on the tremendous path of self-discipline!The year has flown by, and I will embark on The Granddaughter Project 2 this weekend. These ladies have set an incredible pace for milestone completion. They are hungry. They are open. They are intentional. This culmination also included ensuring the right traveling partners were on their life path. All goals set last year, including mine, have been met. Our first reunion is going to be an incredible time of celebration, reflection, and planning for the upcoming year.
Having a group looking to you for guidance and "having it together" is a powerful motivator. I will not let them down. Also, as in any teaching situation, the student provides the teacher a wealth of inspiration and invigoration. I also know without this group pushing me, I would not have extended my grasp this quickly and this far. Who knows what 2019 will entail? I am about to find out and I couldn’t be more excited!
